Sillage

Sillage

Slick silence of paper is met by the frictioned furry of pointed pencil.

As stars start to slip off the sillage of a setting sun
The frontal lobe loosens likewise

It is no longer allowed to dictate what is and what is not
Appropriate

Because that’s when the other systems come out to play.

Hey Everyone!

If you’ve ever wondered why you tend to be more creative at night, well the poem above has the answer. Believe it or not there’s some pretty hard-core science that goes behind our “3am deep thoughts.” Basically, our frontal lobe starts to shut down when we’ve used up most of our energy, or dopamine, which is processed by the frontal cortex. So, without something for the frontal lobe to truly focus on, it starts to loosen up. Usually, the frontal cortex is in charge of saying which thoughts get the check mark of approval to run through your mind and focus on, but when it starts to loosen up from exhaustion, it lets some of these unideal or strange thoughts slip through and the other systems in your brain that have left-over energy get to come out to play. If you want a more detailed and thorough explanation here’s an article on it!

The reason I wrote this poem for this shoot is because those late night thoughts can be applied to all art, not just writing. These exquisite murals, for example, are found on each level of a parking garage in downtown Sarasota, Florida. Who knows, maybe the artist was sitting in bed one night and thought, “hey, wouldn’t it be cool to paint a mural on each level of a parking garage?”  I mean, I don’t know about you, but I don’t usually see such amazing murals in parking garages…

That’s the kind of unique creativity that amazes and inspires me. I’m not saying we will only get these type of ideas late at night when we’ve just about run out of dopamine. I’m just saying we shouldn’t shy away from the different, the unideal, the strange. Especially when it comes to fashion. Fashion is a form of art–the manner in which we style our outfits is an art form. I’m not going to lie, there are times when I put an outfit together and I think, “Is this too crazy? Do I look ridiculous?” And then I’ll do my typical smirk of a smile and slip into the outfit. Doubt is nothing more than fear, and we shouldn’t live our lives in fear.

Again, don’t mistake my words as me telling you to go put on the most ridiculous thing you can find and prance around your local mall. I’m just saying that if you like the outfit, then you shouldn’t let any doubt or fear of judgement stop you from rocking it. It’s your typical empowerment post, but maybe shed in a different shade of light.

Hey, a little encouragement never hurts, right?

Stay Unique.

Thanks for reading,

Miranda

  1. I totally agree with this. Every time I want to write something to post in my blog during daytime, no idea comes out of my mind, but when its time to sleep lots of ideas sprout in my mind, But then, I get too tired to scribble them and procrastinate to jot them down later until those ideas vanish in thin air. Huhu. Well now, I must write them down for these are my creative ideas that my mind releases during night time. 😉 I learn something new today, so thanks for sharing.

Anyway, I love everything in your post today. It is not just informative but also beautiful and gorgeous. Your outfit and your choice of background are just perfect.
